Classic Mirrors for

Modern Spaces

How it's done...

METHOD & TECHNIQUE

I offer two distinct colour variations: Baroque Black and Antique Gold.

Baroque Black is by far the most popular giving a dramatic aged look.

I use a special recipe of chemicals that includes a stannous chloride solution, silver nitrate, distilled water, ammonia, formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid. When mixed in the correct proportions and sprayed onto glass, these chemicals magically form a mirrored silver coating, each piece with its own unique characteristics.

APPLICATIONS

Antique Mirrors have many applications to create ambiance in an interior space, such as: cabinet door inserts, splashbacks in a kitchen, behind glass shelves, the backs of a bookshelves or on the walls in a room.

The mirror can be made on any type of glass:

toughened or laminated glass, glass panes with holes or spaces for plugs, bevelled glass and glass of any thickness.

Thomas Gubb

After graduating from Rhodes University in Grahamstown
(B Fine Art, with distinction) I have worked in the film industry for 30 years as a freelance art director and emerging production designer.

Between film projects I draw extensively in pen and ink, and have recently begun painting in oils in Cape Town with a view to exhibit.

I was recently invited to Kwazulu Natal to the Stepping Stone Studios of Greg Hayes, old friend, master framer and gallery owner, to complete an apprenticeship in the technique of Antique Mirror making. It was apparent to us that there is an obvious gap in the market in Cape Town.  It therefore made sense to start up a modest handmade antique mirror business with a reasonable pricing structure.

As a one-man show, my workshop is low key, affordable and unpretentious. Situated in Cape Town’s industrial area of Paarden Eiland, I work in company with film construction crew and scenic artists. Over the years, as an art director and designer, I have collaborated extensively with decorators, scenic artists and fabricators on hundreds of interior and exterior sets - from shabby to opulent – and everything in between. As a result, I have developed a meticulous and discerning creative eye.
